Demonstration Against the Toronto Star
Introduction for Demonstration Against the Toronto Star
Held on May 2, 1973, at 1 Yonge St., the Toronto Star Building: At the time, the Star refused to accept advertising for The Body Politic. Later, they also refused ads for Glad Day Bookshop. In separate challenges to the Star’s discriminatory policy, The Body Politic and Glad Day both took the Star before the Ontario Press Council. The adjudications were in our favour … but not binding.
A few years later, I took The Globe and Mail before the same press council. I recall going alone with a few notes to the hearing while the Globe sent a Vice-President carrying some enormous tome. Another David and Goliath story, yet again? The council ruled against The Globe and Mail and, for several years Glad Day did the occasional display ad in the Globe Book Review section.
