Introduction for Toronto Gay Action,  The Gay Alliance Toward Equality and CHAT

Toronto Gay Action was at least partially born out of the realization on the part of younger gay males that the Community Homophile Association of Toronto would most likely not engage in direct political action. TGA never had more than a dozen or so members, and most formed the founding core of The Body Politic Collective. In a manner of speaking the political activities and goals of TGA and The Gay Alliance Toward Equality were much the same. The first GATE was created in Vancouver and another soon followed in Edmonton. It made sense to give national unity to the movement by having a GATE organization in Toronto. The core group of Toronto GATE was a bit larger than TGA, perhaps a dozen and a half members. But GATE’s public actions were generally supported by larger numbers of people.
